I tracked my sleep patterns from the first day of the semester all the way until the end, recording the exact time that I closed my eyes to go to sleep and the moment that I woke up. There’s probably an app for that, but I just wrote it down in the memo pad on my phone and then manually typed all of the data points into excel while I was waiting for my plane back to California. Average amount of sleep per night: 7 hours and 1 minute This number is a lot higher than I thought it would be, which is a good thing. Sleep is important. Life goal for next semester: bump this average up to 8 hours. Empirical evidence suggests that I need 8-9 hours of sleep for maximum function, though further research must be conducted to corroborate this hypothesis. Time spent not asleep: 96,748 minutes 1612.47 hours 67.19 days My earliest class was 11am on Mondays, but Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays I didn’t have class until 1pm. It isn’t an easy decision to drop a class, especially half way into the semester, considering the amount of work that you have already put in. But there is nothing wrong with dropping a class. Or two. Or three. It is important to check your graduation requirements though before dropping, because some classes can only be taken in either the fall or spring semeste r and if you don’t take them in sequence, it can throw your course roadmap out of whack. Total number of credits: 36 The minimum number of units for a full-time student is 36. I’ve been following the lead of my fellow course 20 friends for the last few semesters, taking what they were taking and trusting that somehow in the future, I would eventually graduate. This semester I sat myself down and read the graduation requirements for course 20 myself. I came to the glorious conclusion that for the next three semesters, I would only have to take 3-4 classes to graduate in the spring of 2017. Hours spent UROPing: 74 I wish I could have spent more time in lab, but up until drop date, I felt extremely busy and overwhelmed. The amount of time put in varies from semester to semester and depending on what project you are working on and the timeline of your direct supervisor, the hours are flexible. The researchers here are people too, and they recognize that student life can be hectic and draining and are thankfully happy to help work around whatever crazy schedule you might have at the time. I’ve been working in the Griffith Lab (tissue engineering) since last spring, attempting to tackle the vascularization of intestinal spheroids. What are spheroids though? Well, they are essentially in vitro models of the intestine grown from stem cells that are cultured in wells with a variety of growth factors. The spheroids, however, lack blood vessels (vasculature) which would not only help them survive longer by providing an avenue for nutrient and waste exchange, but would also more closely mimic the in v ivo system. We are currently trying different methods for co-culturing multiple different cell types in macrofluidic devices to achieve this, so I’m excited to continue our experiments in the spring! Number of consecutive hours spent on finishing my final video project: 9 hours (10pm-7am) So I may have waited until the last day for the bulk of the editing, but in my defense, I had all of the footage shot and the Japanese interview translated days and weeks in advance. The project was so much fun though, that I hardly noticed the time passing (though the slight tremor in my arms due to sleep deprivation was probably a good indication). In the end, I was really happy with my 5 minute documentary on Yume Wo Katare, a Japanese ramen restaurant in Porter Square where customers are asked to stand up and share their dreams with the rest of the patrons. As disconcerting as the non-linear format may seem to some viewers, the nature of Billys jump in time are not nearly as†¦show more content†¦As we watch Billys life unfold through these series of glimpses into his world, a picture begins to emerge of a man whose traumatic experience during World War II has greatly influenced the rest of his existence. The horrors of war have given Billy a unique perspective on human nature and he doesnt like what he sees. While the question of whether Billy is insane or is truly unstuck in time becomes the focal point of the movie to some extent, it is left to the viewer to draw their own conclusions. I personally believe Billys random sequence of events to be his own coping mechanism for dealing with the traumatic events that shaped his life. Unable to deal with the horrors of his POW experience, he suppresses them only dealing with them at a later date. In fact there are many scenes from his World War II experience that parallel his present day life. One scene that comes to mind is Billy walking up a flight of stairs in his home after coming home from the hospital. The scene cuts back to Billys climb out of the bomb shelter in Dresden. This is almost a sense of dà ©jà   vu for Billy with his past and present reflecting each other. Not just the climbing of the stairs, but the realization that at both junctures in his life he is climbing into an unknown future. Freedom-Determinism Debate The controversy between freewill and determinism has been argued about for years. Freewill is defined as the belief that our behaviour is under our own control and do not act in response to any internal or external factors. Freewill has been found to have four different conditions and to have freewill at least two conditions must be obtained, these are; people have a choice on their actions, have not been coerced by anything or anyone, have full voluntary and deliberate control of what they do. What are the important events that take place during chapters 2 and 3 Essay For this essay I will be discussing the events that take place and lessons learnt by certain characters throughout these two chapters. We have just reached the part of the story where summer has just come to an end in the town Maycomb and school is about to start. At the beginning of chapter two, Dill has just left Maycomb to return home, whilst Scout, the narrator of the story is excited and eager to begin her first day of school. However once she arrives, Miss Caroline Fisher, a young and new teacher from North Alabama decides to haul Scout up to the front. Children who did not go home for lunch were expected to bring food to school. As Miss Caroline walked around the desks looking at the childrens food she sees that Walter Cunningham has no lunch she asks him where it is. She soon offers him a quarter to go and buy lunch but he would not take it. Scout is then provoked to tell Miss Caroline that he was a Cunningham. Miss Caroline is puzzled by this remark so Scout explains it to her. This is where the reader learns that The Cunninghams did not have much and would not take anything they were unable to pay back as they had little or no money. Due to the frustration that has over come Miss Caroline as she is unable to understand the situation that Scout is telling her about, forces her to grab Scout by the collar and slap her with a ruler on her hand. Chapter two ends with the class filling out for lunch. As Scout was the last to leave she was able to see Miss Caroline bury her head into her arms. This could have been because she has discovered her teaching methods dont work and that children at Maycomb are possibly different. As Scout saw Walter as the victim of her getting into trouble she rubbed his noise in the dirt and Jem soon intercedes telling Scout to stop. It is not long until Jem invites Walter over to dinner. As the children arrive home, Jem runs into the kitchen telling Calpurnia, the house servant who had taught Scout to write, to set an extra plate for Walter. Atticus and Walter discuss farming like two men as described on page 30. As Walter receives his food he asks if there are any molasses in the house.
